Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) was taken over from Airport Authority of India (AAI) by Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) a GVK led consortium, in May 2006 and MoEF granted Environmental Clearance to MIAL in April 2007 for the expansion and modernization of CSMIA. The major project components include modernization, development and expansion of passenger terminals, runways, aprons & parking bays, construction of taxiways, vehicle parking and other utility services including state-of-the-art sewage treatment plants.
Environmental management at MIAL is directed in adherence to dedicated Environmental Policy. MIAL has also implemented Environmental Management Standard ISO 14001:2015. Compliance with all the conditions given in the various environmental approvals is monitored through legal registers, consent conditions, compliance registers and a compliance management system at CSMIA. For each approval, records are maintained regularly under an Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2015). These documents and records are reviewed once in six months for strict adherence to the conditions.
At CSMIA, Environment Management & Compliance is always on high priority. Various environmental parameters are being measured and reported by CSMIA in addition to the continuous monitoring system.
MIAL has also hired the services of MoEF authorized laboratory to carry out periodic environmental sampling of ambient air quality, ambient noise levels, wastewater quality, storm water, DG set emissions, etc. Environmental monitoring is carried out every month as per the monitoring schedule to check whether results are within the prescribed standards given in the approvals / consents.
Waste Water Management
Waste water generated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is treated at state of the art Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) based on SBR technology followed by UF & RO. These plants are located at different locations at CSMIA. Three STPs are installed to treat the sewage generated from the terminal buildings & airside facilities.
The Major Components of STP are:
- Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR technology)
- Disinfection Unit
- Pressure Sand Filter
- Sludge Thickener
- Ultra Filtration Unit
- Reverse Osmosis Plant
The treated water is used for flushing and cooling in the terminal buildings.
A noise monitoring system is installed at CSMIA as per the requirements given by DGCA and in line with international Aviation Noise Monitoring requirements. Two permanent noise monitoring terminals have been installed outside the airport premises along the landing and take-off funnel of the main runway. One Mobile Noise Monitoring terminal is installed inside the airport premises. The noise levels are captured continuously and it correlates with the aircraft movements. Various noise indices have been calculated such as:
- LA max
- Leq 24 hrs
- L day etc.
Based on the results, noise modeling and contouring to is done for effective analysis and further implementation of noise abatement measures at CSMIA.
Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
A Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System has also been installed at the airport. The parameters monitored are:

Our waste management system implies use of best in class waste management practices as it forms an integral part of our environmental management system. It is based on well recognized 3-R principle and comprises of five stages – Identification, Storage, Segregation, Recycling and Disposal.
Emphasis is being given on the Waste Minimization programs at Airport. All the waste generated from airport operations is being collected, segregated at source into hazardous and non-hazardous category, stored and disposed by strictly adhering to applicable regulatory requirements. We take consistent efforts to reduce the waste generation and recycle the waste wherever possible.
- Properly marked waste bins for at source segregation of waste.
- Dedicated E-waste bins.
- Organic Waste Converter (OWC) facility for food waste generated at airport.
Our climate change strategy provides a holistic framework for managing the carbon footprint. Our strategy consists of four progressive objectives being taken up in phases. These are:
MIAL has implemented a Green House Gas (GHG) management System since 2011 and was one of the first few airports in Asia Pacific to participate in Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program of Airport Council International (ACI), Asia Pacific. As a part of GHG management program, we have developed a Carbon Accounting and Management System (CAMS) to identify measure & manage GHG emissions. The accounting method followed is based on ISO 14064-1 using IPCC approved emission factors. The emission patterns are identified and specific development programs are implemented to mitigate emission.
MIAL maintains annual inventory of the annual GHG emission in CO2 equivalent, and the respective sources.
The inventory report created is audited, relevant opportunities are identified and projects are undertaken accordingly to reduce emission.
MIAL participates in the ACA program of Airport Council International (ACI) Asia-pacific. Our initiatives to reduce carbon emissions have resulted positively and upgraded the accreditation from ACA Level-1 (Mapping) to ACA Level-2 (Reduction) in 2013 and upgraded successfully to ACA level 3 (Optimisation) in 2015 and achieved highest level of Accreditation, ACA Level 3+ (Neutrality) in 2017.
MIAL’s business approach is one that creates long-term value for all the stakeholders by minimizing risks and harnessing opportunities through effective management of various business aspects pertaining to Economic, Social and Environment bottom-lines.
MIAL launched its first Sustainability Report in 2012 based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 guidelines. Following second and third Sustainability Reports in 2014 & 2016 were prepared as per upgraded GRI G4 guidelines. The latest of the biannual reports, Sustainability Report 2018, highlights MIAL’s performance against Economic, Social and Environment parameters and is prepared as per latest GRI Standards of reporting, meeting the highest application level for completeness, transparency and stakeholder inclusiveness, termed as In-accordance ‘Comprehensive’.
The 2018 Sustainability report is the 1st in Asia Pacific, by any airport to be published as per the GRI Standards in accordance “Comprehensive” in GRI database. The report is framed around the theme “Coming Together For a Sustainable Tomorrow”.
